Hydra: Diary of June by Louise Enhörning

Louise Enhörning is a Stockholm-based photographer and artist. For MH 925, she has created an analog series from Hydra — images that move between observation and introspection, water and life. We asked her to tell us more.

How come you wanted to be a photographer and an artist?

Coming from a family of artists and crafspeople, I have been immersed in the world of art since childhood. My father introduced me to photography during my teenage years and built a darkroom for me when I was 15. From the very beginning, photography felt natural — something I was passionate about and also talented at.

You’ve had a long career in advertising — and yet work is firmly rooted in art photography. How come?

My background combines practical, artistic, and academic training, as I have three different educational backgrounds. I completed an apprenticeship in photography with a focus on fashion and commercial work, attended art school, and later earned a bachelor’s degree in art. This combination has given me both hands-on experience and a deeper theoretical understanding of art and visual culture.

How would you describe your work?

My work explores childhood, memory, and identity, focusing on how we experience time, perception, and the world around us. Through a gender-conscious and time-aware lens, I reflect on what it means to be human today. By bringing together personal experiences and collective narratives, I aim to create space for deeper connections and new ways of understanding the world.

What does a good photograph feel like to you?

I am a skilled printer, so the technical aspects of photography are very important to me. Whether working in color or black and white, I strive for images that are both sensitive and raw.

Where do you find your images — is it something you seek out, or something that finds you?

Most of my images begin in my imagination. I first see them in my mind and then go out and create them through photography.

What draws you to analog film?

The material itself.

Tell us about the series you made in collaboration with MH 925.

Created during a stay on Hydra, this series emerged from swimming, observing, and responding to the island’s life. The photographs are not intended as a documentary record of place, but as an exploration of atmosphere, memory, and human presence.

Through fragments of daily experience, shifting light, and quiet gestures, the work reflects on the emotional textures that shape our perception of the world. The images move between observation and introspection, suggesting that the ordinary can become a site of contemplation. Although grounded in the specific context of Hydra, the series ultimately reflects broader questions of time, water, and belonging.
